ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

"Tons of Rock aims at becoming one of the most sustainable music festivals in Norway. We  continuously search for new and interesting alternatives, and try to implement more sustainable solutions into the festival where this is applicable.

We are continuously working on improving and implementing more suitable actions across our various departments, to actively minimize our environmental impact.”

We track our climate footprint year by year which allows us to systematically map where our emissions are the highest, so that we can target these areas and set realistic sustainability goals where it's most efficient. Tons of Rock is a certified Miljøfyrtårn, and are members of the Green Producers Club.

Our goal is to provide our festival with 100% of our energy from electric power sources. In 2023 we managed to power close to 100% of our energy for production and festival site with grid power, by installing a temporary power grid. By installing the temporary power grid, we were able to reduce our consumption of diesel to a minimum.

At our temporary recycling station we manually sort the produced waste from the festival site into what can be recycled and what can not. Our goal is to minimize the volume of both our residual waste and our organic waste. Food packaging are of biodegradable materials and can be recycled as organic waste. At the festival you will be able to recycle plastic cups, cardboard, organic waste and residual waste.

We do believe that a clean festival gives a better experience for our guests. Help us keep the festival clean and free from waste on the ground by using our recycling bins throughout the festival site.

Together with Infinitum we use a deposit return scheme for our plastic cups. This means that we collect all of the cups from the festival and return them to a recycling facility which gives the plastic cups a new life.

In 2024, Tons of Rock introduced an environmental fee on all drinking cups in the area. The environmental fee is set at NOK 20 and is paid when purchasing the first unit in the bar. If you return the cup to the bar with your next purchase, you will not have to pay environmental fee on the next unit.

Ekebergsletta is one of Oslo's largest park areas and every year we ensure that the grass is put back in even better condition than before the festival. In collaboration with Østfold Grass, we aerate and dress the grass both before and after the festival, and we also sow new grass and fertilizers after the festival. This is a measure we take to protect the ability of the grass to grow back naturally after the event has ended, so that others can enjoy the park facilities after us.

In the festival area, there are several cultural monuments that we, together with the city antiquities in Oslo, ensure to protect in a responsible way, so that these areas can be left in peace and quiet during the festival.

Tons of Rock has deliberately chosen to remove car parking and encourages all festival participants to use public transport. There is a limited number of parking spaces reserved for HC parking.

Tons of Rock does not own any vehicles of its own and rents vehicles and construction machinery to be able to build Norway's biggest festival. We emphasize electric vehicles where possible. In 2022, all artist transport was fully electric vehicles, and we are working to ensure that the car fleet will be fully electric by 2030.

We greatly appreciate your commitment and hope that you will help us so that we can reach our climate goals! Be considerate of each other and of the area you are in, remember to sort at the source, travel collectively and clean up after yourself where you have been!
